Taylor, 1795A finely-bound copy of the architect James Cavanah Murphy’s measured plans of the Dominican Church and Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, founded in 1388 by John I of Portugal in thanksgiving for his victory in the battle of Aljubarrota (and thereafter known as “Batalha”, the Portuguese word for battle). It was the first volume illustrative of medieval antiquities comparable in standard to the great volumes on classical antiquities published earlier in the century and had widespread influence, not only in England, but also in Germany. -

Wittenbergs Denkmäler der Bildnerei, Baukunst und Malerei, mit historischen und artistischen Erläuterungen
Wittenberg, Zimmermann (‘Gedruckt in der Rübnerschen Buchdruckerei in Wittenberg’), 1825Only edition of an account of the artistic treasures of Wittenberg, compiled and partly-illustrated by the sculptor Schadow, who as his sight deteriorated had turned more to writing art theory and history and to graphic work (he was a proficient draughtsman, engraver, and lithographer). The publication celebrates Schadow’s bronze statue of Luther, designed between 1802 (the date of a competition sponsored by the Vaterländische-Litterarische Gesellschaft der Grafschaft Mansfeld) and 1820, and unveiled in the Marktplatz in Wittenberg for the Reformationsfest on 31 October 1821. A folding lithograph by Schadow himself records the Luther statue from three sides; an anonymous engraving depicts it beneath a canopy made to Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s designs; and another by the Berlin printmaker Ferdinand Berger serves to introduce the volume (frontispiece). Among the many illustrations are engravings reproducing sculptural monuments in the Schlosskirche (Allerheiligen) and Stadtkirche (Marienkirche), Lucas Cranach the elder’s altarpiece in the Stadtkirche, and lithograph portraits of Peter Vischer and Lucas Cranach the elder by Schadow, and an impressive self-portrait. -

Publisher’s pictorial wrappers. - Exhibition of sculpture, ivories, metalwork, and other objets d’art, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, textiles, pottery, arms and armour, from c. 1315 until after 1400. The almost 100 manuscripts (nos. 228-319) were selected and described by François Avril; “his text and catalogue notes [are] as remarkable a contribution to the subject and period as was Eric Millar’s in 1932” (from a notice in The Book Collector, Summer 1982, pp.218-219). ¶ Corners lightly rubbed; otherwise a very good copy.
