Wiesbaden, Harrassowitz Verlag, 2006
(30 cm), (4) 200 pp., 90 colour plates (included in pagination). Publisher’s pictorial wrappers. - Catalogue of an exhibition organised for the annual conference of the Arbeitskreis für Erfassung und Erschliessung Historischer Bucheinbände (AEB). Forty of the 90 bindings exhibited were described in a previous catalogue of the Library’s bindings (Ferdinand Geldner’s Bucheinände aus elf Jahrhunderten, Munich 1958); “A comparison of both books shows how much the study of bindings has progressed during the last 40 years… One of the most striking examples is a ‘golden’ treasure binding, which was described in the 1958 book (Plate XI, illus. 10) as German from the twelfth century, while the 2006 catalogue (no. 11) has to state that it is in fact a nineteenth-century piece”. The text is placed on the left-hand side of each opening, with the colour illustration opposite; a list of literature cited, indexes of binders and former owners, are found at the end. “It is sure to be useful for anyone with an interest in bindings” (quotations from a review by Jan Storm van Leeuwen, in Quaerendo, volume 37, 2007, pp.333-335. ¶ As new.
