(23 cm), viii, 294 pp. Publisher’s blue cloth (no dust jacket issued). - This “invaluable guide to the rich collection of the British Library’s early Spanish printed books” is a revision of Sir Henry Thomas’ catalogue of 1921, “a major improvement which deserves to be ranked among the memorable milestones set by English bibliographers charting the early history of Spanish printing” (from a review by Gustav Ungerer, in Huntington Library Quarterly, volume 54, 1991, pp.275-279). The work has grown from 101 pages to 224 pages and now features three substantial indexes (pp.227-294). The first records the Spanish towns in which the books were printed and, under each separate town, the printers and publishers active there; the production of each printer and publisher is presented in the third index. It is virtually impossible to extract such information from the Library’s online catalogue. The second index lists the foreign towns where Spanish books were printed, often anonymously, or under false imprints. Rhodes’ achievement in identifying the printers and the places of printing of dozens of anonymous publications is immense. ¶ Excellent copy.
