Prince-Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy (1593-1657) is known as a significant and sophisticated collector of the visual arts, a patron of literature and of the musical and theatrical arts, founder of two academies (Accademia dei Desiosi in Rome, and Accademia dei Solinghi in Turin), a major political figure who played a crucial role in the conclave of 1623 and influenced the election of Maffeo Barberini as Pope Urban VIII, was at the centre of events during the War of the Mantuan succession 1628-1631, and endeavoured to become ruler of Savoy after the death of his brother. But although deeply engaged his entire life with artists, authors, philosophers, and scientists, receiving the dedication of some two dozen books, and commissioning at least one, much is unknown about his bibliophilic interests. Only a tiny fraction has been recovered from apparently substantial libraries created in both Turin and Rome: eighteen books and manuscripts (in twenty volumes), recognizable solely because of the armorial insignia gilt-tooled on their covers. This post reviews past literature on Cardinal Maurizio’s bindings and presents an updated Census of the recorded bindings. In an Appendix, the 1657 post-mortem inventory of Maurizio’s library (the only extant list of his books) is presented. An effort has been made to identify each book listed, citing a probable or possible edition.

The fourth son of Carlo Emanuele I di Savoia (1562-1630), and Caterina Michela d’Asburgo (1567-1597), Maurizio was educated in Turin by the Jesuit Giovanni Botero, and at the age of fourteen granted a cardinal deaconate by Pope Paolo V. Unusually, he was never ordained, and he remained therefore free to contract a dynastically important marriage, if the necessity should arise. As an adolescent at the court of his father, Maurizio was surrounded by artists and writers, and after his arrival in Rome, in 1621, he established a lavish household in the former Orsini palace on the Monte Giordano, and founded the artistic and literary Accademia dei Desiosi.¹ Maurizio resided intermittently in Rome until 1637, when the sudden death of his brother Vittorio Amedeo I inaugurated a civil war in the duchy which required his return to Turin and, in 1642, renunciation of his cardinal’s hat and marriage to his niece Ludovica Cristina (1629-1692). Maurizio remained thereafter in Piedmont, occupying a wing of the royal palace in Turin (the future Palazzo Chiablese) and a villa on the side of the Collina (the future Villa della Regina), where he died of apoplexy on 3 October 1657 aged 64.

Books bound for Cardinal Maurizio between 1607 and about 1632 customarily display the heraldic insignia of his father² combined with the symbols of his own ecclesiastical rank: a broad-brimmed hat, called a galero, with varying numbers of tassels. After his brother, Vittorio Amedeo I, became duke of Savoy (26 July 1630), Savoyard claims to the so-called kingdom of Cyprus and associated royal territories of Jerusalem and Armenia were reasserted.³ On 23 December 1632, Vittorio Amedeo proclaimed that henceforth the arms of Savoy would incorporate the Cypriot escutcheon, and be surmounted by a closed (royal) rather than open (ducal) crown. In two publications of 1993 and 2005, Francesco Malaguzzi recorded thirteen bindings displaying arms of the first type, and one binding featuring the revised, augmented coat of arms.⁴ Another four bindings are described here, in a new iteration of Malaguzzi’s census, two featuring the ducal crown (nos. 6 and 15 in List below) and two of the rarer, royal type (nos. 1 and 5). After his marriage in 1642, Maurizio resigned his honorific office in the Church. He is presumed to have then adopted secular arms, although no bookbinding of this type has so far been identified.

Other marks of Cardinal Maurizio’s ownership mostly await identification.⁵ On the title-page of Du Tronchet’s letter-writing manual (no. 6) a monogram of the letters m and l (signifying Maurizio and his wife Ludovica) is written in the lower margin, framed by four S-fermé (the capital letter being closed by a single stroke). The s-fermé was a mark of affection, expressing fermesse of love, or faithfulness, and the inscription suggests that this book was still in Maurizio’s possession after his marriage (29 September 1642). It could be evidence of greater intimacy between Maurizio and his bride - thirty-six years his junior - than is generally assumed. Bindings owned by both Maurizio’s father and mother occasionally featured the s-fermé in their decoration,⁶ and two books bound for Maurizio before 1632 (nos. 7 and 9) are similarly embellished.

5. Du Tronchet: monogram of the letters M(aurizio) and L(udovica); shelfmark, or inventory number

Some of Cardinal Maurizio’s transactions with booksellers are documented in payment ledgers within the household accounts, however the source of only one of the eighteen known volumes has been linked so far to a purchase entry. In 1618-1619, Cardinal Maurizio attended negotiations in Paris for the marriage of his brother, Vittorio Amedeo, to Marie Christine, and acquired books in six Parisian shops. The booksellers are identified by the Cardinal’s bookkeeper as “Claudio de Vales” (“tanti libri”, at cost of 1057 fiorini), “Bernardo Godefroy” (“sei libri”, 430 fiorini), “Giacomo Saule” (“per libri lasciati a S.A.”, 90 fiorini), “Antonio di Vauconsavia” (“tanti libri”, 519 fiorini), “Steffano Clavier” (“per libri”, 538 fiorini), and “Giacomo de Taulegne” (“tanti libri”, 681 fiorini).⁷ In the year he arrived in Rome, Cardinal Maurizio paid to Fabio Magini the sum of 458 fiorini, “il Prezzo di un libro di cosmografia”. This book probably is to be identified with no. 10 in our List below, a copy of the first edition of Giovanni Antonio Magini’s atlas of Italy, “data in luce da Fabio suo figliuolo al serenissimo Ferdinando Gonzaga duca di Mantova” (Bologna: Sebastiano Bonomi [for Fabio Magini], 1620).⁸ The Cardinal financed a new edition of Giacomo Lauro’s Antiquae urbis splendor, and distributed copies in luxurious bindings among his relations. He made a payment on 4 August 1625 to Giacomo Lauro, and Malaguzzi is confident that it refers to a splendidly bound copy of that book now in Turin.⁹ Few other payments related to books are identifiable in the purchase ledgers: one to the Torinese bookseller (Giovanni Domenico?) “Tarino” in 1629, “per tanti libri spediti per servizio del Sig. D. Silvio (il confessore)”; another “al signor Antonio Sellaro, suo rimborso […] per la copertura d’un libro per servizio di S.A.” in 1636. A substantial payment however of forty scudi to one “Moisè da Castelnuovo hebreo” in 1626 for library shelving (“per tante scansia di Libri”) suggests that the Cardinal already had or was intending to create a substantial library.¹⁰

No one identifiable as a bookbinder is named in the household accounts. Five of the eighteen recorded bindings are covered with vellum, twelve with either brown or red goatskin, and the material of one binding remains unknown (no. 10). All of the vellum bindings are decorated with gilt arms (type 1) in the centres of their covers. Two have in addition a gilt ornament at the outer angles of a gilt frame (nos. 2 and 14); one has no corner ornament, but gilt laces d’amour repeated outside the gilt frame (no. 16); one has both laces d’amour and heavy, gilt cornerpieces (no. 12); and another is decorated by repeated impressions of a cherub’s head tool (no. 17). The publication dates of these books fall in the range 1609 to ca 1620, and they perhaps were bound before Cardinal Maurizio’s arrival in Rome. The goatskin bindings cover books printed 1569-1630s and appear to be Roman. Two bindings have been assigned to the Andreoli workshop, no. 3 by Piccarda Quilici (in 1995) and no. 4 by Francesco Malaguzzi (in 1999). The binding of no. 5 shares a roll, a scallop tool, and a term figure with a binding produced in an anonymous Roman shop for Cardinal Scipione Borghese.¹¹

In the months after Maurizio’s death on 3 October 1657, inventories were conducted of his possessions in his city palace and villa. An inventory of the contents of the Palazzo Chiablese was taken by the notary Oratio Alfazio on 13 December 1657. It records a library of approximately 180 volumes, organised according to their format in 84 inventory entries.¹² The Torinese bookseller (Bartolomeo?) Zavatta valued these books at 226 lire, 10 soldi. Like most notarial inventories, the entries are brief and occasionally the bibliographical details are cryptographic, making it difficult to identify authors or titles with certainty (see Appendix below). We find just one of the eighteen recorded books, no. 12 in our List, Antonio Navarro de Larrateguí’s Epitome de los señores de vizcaya (Turin 1620), linked to an inventory entry: “Epithome de ss.i di Biscaglia Spag.o tom 1” (f. 27r, line [10]; Appendix no. 31).

What became of Maurizio’s library in Turin? Archival research undertaken by Francesco Malaguzzi in testamentary and other documents of Maurizio’s widow, Ludovica, her principal heir, Vittorio Amedeo II, and collateral heirs (the Doria di Ciriè), combined with exhaustive physical searches in local libraries, did not lead to the discovery of any book listed in the post-mortem inventory.¹³ The fate of Maurizio’s Roman library is likewise puzzling. Included in the Turin inventory are copies of the French translation of Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo’s treatise on perspective and of a treatise on imprese by Giovanni Ferro, but no other books on art, as might be expected of the “Piedmontese Maecenas”, patron of the painters Domenichino, Guido Reni, Francesco Albani, among others. Maurizio founded two literary academies: the Accademia dei Desiosi, in Rome, and the Accademia dei Solinghi, in Turin; yet few works by his protégés are listed in the inventory. Even more striking is the absence of books dedicated to Cardinal Maurizio,¹⁴ and of academic disputations addressed to him.¹⁵

It would seem that Maurizio’s Roman library was not transferred to Turin. The Cardinal had accumulated in Rome substantial debts, in particular to the Orsini family, from whom he let the Palazzo Montegiordano, and his possessions perhaps were left behind in part-settlement (portions of his substantial collections of works of art also are untraced).¹⁶ Two alternative hypotheses are that they were lost by shipwreck en-route from Rome to Genoa,¹⁷ or distributed as gifts.¹⁸ Malaguzzi concluded that if Maurizio had indeed collected a valuable library during his stays in Paris and Rome, it was at least partially dispersed during the years of the civil war and in any case before his marriage.¹⁹
