The print depends from a graphite drawing (221 × 165 mm) acquired by the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1985 (PD 267-1985); it is one of Nicholson’s infrequent essays in lithography. Our impression is titled in brown ink “Mr. David”, “No. 25”, and “Limited to 100 copies”. An impression hors série signed on the recto “Nicholson” and “No.”, in blue ink (not brown, as here), is in the British Museum. An impression additionally titled like ours in brown ink “Mr. David” and “No. 24”, was sold by Christie’s on 17 September 2009, lot 83 (mistakenly described as “an early working proof… reworked in places in blue crayon by the artist”); another impression titled in brown ink “Mr. David”, “No. 13”, and “Limited to 100 copies” was sold by Christie’s on 10 April 2013, lot 12.

The Earliest directory of the book trade by John Pendred (1785) : Edited with are introduction and an appendix by Graham Pollard (Supplement to the Bibliographical Society’s Transactions, 14)
London, Bibliographical Society, 1955(23 cm), xxiii (1), 90 (2) pp. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - A directory of all members of the book trade in Great Britain and Ireland, a series of alphabetical lists of printers, engravers, type-founders, bookbinders, booksellers, etc., with their addresses, and often their specialities (music-sellers, wallpaper manufacturers, etc.). Only one copy is known of Pendred’s book (ESTC T181182; Bodleian Library, Vet. A5 g.5). The editor’s introduction gives an entertaining account of Pendred himself (he was a journeyman compositor and the author of some doggerel verse) and a critical account of his methods. “The volume concludes with an Appendix [pp.49-90] containing a detailed and exhaustive list of documents and books on which future research must be based, with locations of copies of all of them. Not for the first time, one is left astonished at and grateful for the range of Mr Pollard’s knowledge” (from a review by J.E. The English market for printed books (Sandars Lectures 1959)

Spiral binding, plain orange card cover. - A survey of the mechanics of bookselling from Caxton’s time until 1914, a text of Graham Pollard’s four Sandars lectures, treating respectively the rise of the wholesale trade, the establishment of the London monopoly, the share-book system (the Congers of the 18th-century bookselling scene), and the emergence of publishers who dealt direct with retailers and consequent decline of the wholesalers. This is an early photocopy of a cyclostyled document which had limited circulation (copies in Cambridge University Library, 850.a.12; and British Library, Ac.2660.m.15), until Pollard’s death (1976), after which it was published as “The English Market for Printed Books” in Publishing History, volume 4 (1978), pp.7-48.
