The Essling library was largely dispersed before the War, mainly at a sale in Zurich in May 1939; but few of the French books came onto to the market then, and it was the best of these which were the outstanding lots here. Prices were subdued, and many lots did not reach their “Prix d’estimation” in the list which accompanied the catalogue. This may have been because they were over-valued, or “there may have been another reason for this, in that a group of booksellers from abroad saw fit blatantly to indulge in practices from which legal or moral considerations might well have deterred them on their home grounds… The half-dozen xylographic book covers gave rise to much discussion and the general opinion of the sale-room was against them all” (Notes on Foreign Sales, in The Times Literary Supplement, 10 April 1953, p.244). ¶ Wrapper chipped, losses.
