[New series, numbered: 1] Livres anciens et modernes; bibliographie de la librairie W.S. Kündig (catalogue of an auction conducted 12-14 May 1952)

    Geneva, Nicolas Rauch, 1952
(28 cm), 178 pp., 64 plates, illustrations. 847 lots. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Included is the reference library of the bookseller-auctioneer William S. Kündig (1893-1951), elected in 1939 first president of the Swiss Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (VEBUKU), and in 1948 first president of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).

Ramuz, manuscrits autographes (catalogue of an auction sale conducted 2-4 March 1953)

    Geneva, Nicolas Rauch, 1953
(28 cm), 218 pp., 52 plates, illustrations. 767 lots. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Includes many fine books from the library of the Prince d’Essling. The Essling library was largely dispersed before the War, mainly at a sale in Zurich in May 1939; but few of the French books came onto to the market then, and it was the best of these which were the outstanding lots here. Prices were subdued, and many lots did not reach their “Prix d’estimation” in the list which accompanied the catalogue. This may have been because they were over-valued, or “there may have been another reason for this, in that a group of booksellers from abroad saw fit blatantly to indulge in practices from which legal or moral considerations might well have deterred them on their home grounds… The half-dozen xylographic book covers gave rise to much discussion and the general opinion of the sale-room was against them all” (Notes on Foreign Sales, in The Times Literary Supplement, 10 April 1953, p.244). ¶ Wrapper chipped, losses.

[New series, numbered: 4] Architecture, ornements, décoration intérieure, recueils de vues [other title:] Bibliothèque Edmond Fatio (catalogue of an auction sale conducted 23 November 1953)

    Geneva, Nicolas Rauch, 1953
(28 cm), 40 pp., 16 plates, illustrations. 198 lots. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Important sale catalogue of books and drawings from the collection of the Swiss architect Edmond Fatio (1871-1959); a second sale was conducted by Rauch on 3-4 June 1959 (see below, Catalogue 21). Many of Fatio’s sheets had featured in exhibitions held in Zurich in 1946 (Architektur- und Dekorations-Zeichnungen der Barockzeit aus der Sammlung Edmond Fatio, by A. Bovy & R. Zürcher, Zurich: Graphische Sammlung der Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, 1946) and in Florence in 1958 (I Disegni Scenografici delle Raccolta Fatio, Florence: La Strozzina, 1958; cf. M. Ferrero Viale, “I Disegni Scenografici della Raccolta Fatio”, in Critica d’Arte, volume 23, 1957, pp.370-395). ¶ Wrapper chipped, small losses.

[New series, numbered: 7] Précieux incunables, éditions aldines, livres rares du XVIe au XIXe s., livres modernes illustrés par des peintres de la bibliothèque de M. B*** [other title:] Bibliothèque de M. B*** (catalogue of an auction sale conducted 29-30 March 1954)

    Geneva, Nicolas Rauch, 1954
(28 cm), 146 pp., 28 plates, illustrations. 400 lots. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - ‘As usual, the books derived from many and varied sources, but there was a hard core, consisting mainly of French sixteenth and seventeenth-century books, which came from one library… There were a number of Aldines, at present out of fashion as such, and for the most part they brought low prices… The eighteenth-century illustrated books continued to be a weak market and were in many cases bought back… The modern French illustrated books were, relatively speaking, the sensation of the sale’ (from ‘Notes on Foreign Sales’ in The Times Literary Supplement, 14 May 1954, p.320).

[New series, numbered: 9] Modes et costumes de la bibliothèque Louis Becker (catalogue of an auction sale conducted 30 November 1954)

    Geneva, Nicolas Rauch, 1954
(28 cm), 62 pp., 20 plates, illustrations. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - “London dealers will remember Louis Becker, a colourful personality who often visited them in the 1920s and, after driving a hard bargain, was delighted to carry away defective sets or volumes and odd plates which, irrespective of size and condition, assisted him toward completion. It was his own connexion with the garment trade rather than a feeling for books that stimulated him, and the huge library which he assembled in Paris was not distinguished for condition; thus high prices could not nowadays be expected for these books nor were they, in fact, realized” (from an anonymous report of the sale, in The Times Literary Supplement, 25 March 1955, p.188). An “importante bibliothèque sur les modes et costumes” (F. Lugt, Les Marques de collections de dessins et d’estampes, The Hague 1921-1956, no. 4234).

[New series, numbered: 10] Cent beaux livres du dix-huitième siècle (catalogue of an auction sale conducted 1 December 1954)

    Geneva, Nicolas Rauch, 1954
(28 cm), 51 pp., illustrations. 100 lots. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Sale of French eighteenth-century books collected by Baron Robert von Hirsch. “Various factors contributed to the attainment of very high prices by most of the 100 lots: bidding appeared to be unrestricted by any pacts, the sale had been extensively publicized in advance by various interested parties and it had been so long since a homogenous collection of this type had come up for auction that there was a tendency to consider ‘every goose a swan… and every lass a queen’; in fact, many of the books were not above criticism and the whole collection gave the appearance of having suffered from neglect” (from an anonymous report of the sale, in The Times Literary Supplement, 25 March 1955, p.188).

(28 cm), 381 (3) pp., frontispiece, 7 plates, illustrations. 575 lots. Publisher’s printed wrappers, with the leather exlibris of Brunschwig on upper cover. - A second volume (Deuxième partie.
