A revised edition of the author’s Nachrichten von Franckfurter Künstlern und Kunst-Sachen (Frankfurt am Main 1780), containing in its first part biographical notices of Frankfurt painters, printmakers, sculptors, architects, goldsmiths, and other craftsmen, and in the Anhang extensive descriptions of local public and private collections (pp.459–612 and pp.613–627 respectively), together with a list of engraved portraits of Frankfurt artists.

The biographies are organised chronologically, commencing with the fourteenth-century bell-founder Magister Bertuldus, and ending with the stonemason Karl Friedrich Oehme, born in 1758 (the previous edition had concluded with Michael Zell). The author was above all else a connoisseur of drawings and prints – he had published in 1778 the first systematic catalogue of Dürer’s prints, based on his own collections¹ – and his detailed entries for several printmakers continue to be of interest to modern specialists.²

In the appendix – the first guidebook to the city’s repositories of art – the author considers in no obvious order eleven churches and monasteries, the Stadtbiblio­thek, Der Römer, the Comödienhaus, Johann Christian Senckenberg-Stiftung, Thurn und Taxis Palace, then pri­vate collections (twenty-six are mentioned). Among the former, the books, prints, coins, and Kunst-Stücke in the Stadtbiblio­thek, and the treasures of Dom St. Bartholomäus, engross Hüsgen the longest (pp.462–488 and pp.499–556 respectively); the private collector with the most detailed entry is the author’s friend, Johann Isaac von Gerning (pp.618–625).

‘Der Anhang konnte seinerzeit als praktischer Weg­weiser zur Besichtigung der Stadt die­nen. Da fast alle der angeführten Sammlungen später auf­gelöst wurden und viele der beschriebenen Gebäude mittler­weile zerstört oder verändert sind, ist auch der Anhang der “Nachrichten” eine aufschlußreiche Quelle zur Frankfurter Kunst- und Kultur geschichte’.³

Hüsgen dedicates the new edition to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose notice in the book (pp.437–440) has the florid beginning ‘Wer Göthe ist, dies brauche ich wohl der Welt, der Teutschen gelehrten und ungelehrten Welt nicht zu sagen, seine Handlungen und Schriften sind bekannt genug…’. One of Goethe’s etchings, ‘Landschaft mit altem Turm’ (1769), is cited. In the appendix, the collections in the family home ‘bey Frau Rath Goehte, auf dem grosen Hirschgraben’, and nine engraved portraits of Goethe, are mentioned.⁴

Although copies are in the principal German libraries, the book is not widely held else­where. These copies are known to the writer
