Eighty volumes (various sizes), as issued, in the publisher’s bindings (wrappers or cloth boards) - A fine, unbroken run of the sixty catalogues issued in London and New York by the firm of Martin Breslauer, from 1941-1994. Catalogue 52 was the first catalogue issued by the firm Martin Breslauer from London (43, Bedford Court Mansions, Bedford Avenue, London W.C.1); catalogue 54 was issued from Stamford Court in 1941, and is the first after the death of Martin Breslauer (October 1940), and to have Bernard Breslauer’s name on the inside cover. Catalogue 103 was the first issued from New York, and Catalogue 111 is the last published by Bernard Breslauer (1918-2004).

Offered with eighteen Lists and two publications hors série (various sizes), issued 1943-1977, also in publisher’s bindings (printed self-wrapper, or wrappers). ¶ Some of the earlier catalogues extracted from a binding; overall in excellent condition.

Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Catalogue 52 was the first catalogue issued by the firm Martin Breslauer from London. Martin Breslauer (1871-1940) had established his bookselling business in 1898 and issued catalogues from addresses in Berlin under this name from c. 1905 (no. 1) to 1937 (no. 51), when the business was relocated in London. There, Breslauer resumed issuing catalogues in 1939 with no. 52 (trading from 43, Bedford Court Mansions, Bedford Avenue, London W.C.1). His son, Bernard H. Breslauer, took over the firm after Martin’s death in 1940. The binding reproduced on the frontispiece (Order of St Michel, Le livre de statuts, c. 1550) is now British Library, Henry Davis Gift, 398 (Mirjam Foot, The Henry Davis Gift, I, p.182, no. 22). ¶ Edges of cover light-stained.

A label issued by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association is tipped to the upper cover (concerning the requirement that American customers remit in Dollars). ¶ Date stamp on cover of the California Academy of Sciences (October 14 1940).

The first 41 items are illuminated and text manuscripts, c. 750-1916; the most remarkable are the 12th Century Fountains Abbey “Liber Ezechialis” in a Romanesque binding (item 6, £1200; now British Library, Henry Davis Gift, 80); the “Ordo ad consecrandum” for Jeanne d’Evreaux, third wife of Charles IV, conducted 11 May 1326 (item 19; sold to H.P. Kraus, his Catalogue 88, 1958, item 23; now University of Illinois Library, MS 0124); an Hours of the Virgin (Use of Le Mans) illuminated c. 1470 in the atelier of Maître François (item 33, £3800); and the Giraldi-Guicciardini Hours, illuminated by Attavante (item 34, £2400). Self-wrappers. - This manuscript had passed in quick succession through the collections of Landau-Finaly (Sotheby’s, 12 July 1948, lot 59), Eric Millar, Harry Lawrence Bradfer-Lawrence, to Breslauer. A nearly-identical description was published in Breslauer Catalogue 80, with the same illustrations. The manuscript returned to the market in Sotheby’s, 2 December 1986, lot 56, and was seen thereafter in the hands of Bruce Ferrini and Maruzen.

Also presented (item 3, $75,000) is Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parsival ([Strasbourg: Mentelin] 1477) and Titurel (idem 1477). ¶ Numeral in ink on cover; two annotations in text.
