Publisher’s pictorial wrappers. - Includes (item 62, £285) a copy of Sabellico, Histoire Vinitiane, 1544, bound for Cardinal Granvelle (from the Lucien-Graux sale, Paris, 26 January 1957, lot 118; now Musée de Mariemont, Inv. Ac.71/14); and a calligraphic letter on vellum (item 102, £330) from King James I to the Emperor of Japan, dated 10 January 1611 (now in the James Ford Bell Library, University of Minnesota, Bell 1611 oJa). Also offered is a remarkable enamel and silver-gilt binding (item 148, £450) by Georg Strauch of Nuremberg, from the collection of William Boyd Carpenter, Bishop of Ripon (1841-1918), then Gumuchian & Cie (Catalogue XII, 1929, no. 173), Grace Whitney Hoff (1862-1938), and Lucien Graux (1878-1944); it re-appeared recently in Christie’s as the property of “A Private Collector, London, and then by descent” (3 June 2014, lot 373, £17,500).
