Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Items 21-22 are two settings of an Indulgence for the benefit of the confraternity of St. James of Compostella, printed by Wynken de Worde in 1498. Twelve copies of this indulgence (six of each setting) were extracted by Barnard from the binding of a Bible which he bought at Puttick’s, 29 October 1913, lot 278, and sold to Cambridge University Library in the same year (Oates 2029). All copies of the Indulgence are now in institutional collections (Duff 213; Lotte Hellinga, Printing in England in the fifteenth century: E. Gordon Duff’s bibliography, with supplementary descriptions, chronologies and a census of copies, London 2009, pp.248-249). ¶ Stamped “Advance copy” on wrapper. Occasional pencil mark in margins; lower wrapper annotated in pencil.
