The Fairfax library and archive (catalogue for an auction conducted by Sotheby's, London (14 December 1993)

London, Sotheby’s, 1993
(26 cm), [280] pp., illustrations (some in colour). 541 lots. Price list loosely inserted. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - A collection of some 5000 pamphlets and tracts, manuscripts and documents relating to the Fairfax family and the part it played during the English Civil War. The archive was substantially assembled by Albert, 12th Lord Fairfax of Cameron (1870-1939). “Quaritch bought nearly half of the sale, and Lawson and Maggs were also active, along with Christopher Edwards and James Burmester… The impressive catalogue, arranged, like the Thomason catalogue, in chronological order, will remain on many reference shelves as a final tribute to a remarkable collection” (from a lengthy saleroom report in The Book Collector, Spring 1994, pp.102-106). Unsold lots were offered - in smaller bundles, and with less ambitious reserves – in Sotheby’s London sale 13 December 1994; further material from the archive was offered by Bonhams, London, 5 June 2001. ¶ Annotated copy.
