Valuable manuscripts and printed books (catalogue for an auction conducted by Christie, Manson & Woods, London, 24 November 1993)

London, Christie, Manson & Woods, 1993
(27 cm), 154 (12) pp., illustrations (some in colour). 150 lots. Price list loosely inserted. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Sale includes incunables from the Shuckburgh library, “this time with the provenance identified (the shelf-labels still in situ); but the quality was up and down. How much of the library still remains?” “A further clutch of manuscripts and printed books carried the discreet printed book label of the New York collector Helmut Friedlaender” (quotations from saleroom report in The Book Collector, Spring 1994, pp.97-98). Christie’s had previously sold early books and manuscripts from the Shuckburgh Library on 4 April 1962; notable single volumes were sold by Christie’s, 8 December 1982 (vellum copies of the 1462 Bible and 1516 Mainz Psalter), 2003 (sale by private treaty of the 1460 Mentelin Bible to the Scheide Library, Princeton University), and 25 May 2016 (four Shakespeare folios; another Schuckburgh copy of the Second Folio was sold at Phillips, 17 November 2000). Christie’s dispersed the Helmut N. Friedlaender library on 23 April and 24 October 2001. ¶ Lower wrapper creased. Annotated copy, partly priced.
