Publisher’s pictorial wrappers. - Over 100 lots of Euclid formed the nucleus of the sale: the 1482 first Latin edition made £110,000; a copy of the 1510 Venice edition, bound in contemporary goatskin, £15,000; the 1572 first English edition, £23,000; and the 1594 translation into Arabic text, £21,000. The first two editions of Pacioli’s Summa de arithmetica realised £135,000 and £28,000; the top price of £190,000 was paid for the third edition of Jean Pèlerin, De artificiali perspectiva (Toul 1523).
