Sotheby's Monaco SAM

Bibliothèque Marcel Jeanson, première partie: Chasse § Deuxième partie: Ornithologie (catalogues for auctions conducted by Sotheby’s Monaco SAM, Sporting d’Hiver, Monte Carlo, 28 February 1987 and 16 June 1988)

Monte Carlo, Sotheby’s Monaco SAM, 1987
Two volumes (27.5 cm), I (28 February-1 March 1987): 515 (5) pp., illustrations (some in colour). Lots numbered 1-598. II (16 June 1988): 205 (13) pp., illustrations (some in colour). Lots numbered 1-392. Lists of prices realised and buyers’ names are loosely inserted. Uniform publisher’s printed green cloth, dust jacket (Deuxième partie, only). - Subsequent sales offered Jeanson’s collections of natural history drawings: Part III: French ornithological watercolours of the 17th-19th centuries (Sotheby’s, London, 13 December 1996), Part IV: Important ornithological watercolour drawings (Christie’s, London 22 March 2000), and [Part V]: Natural history: including important ornithological watercolours from the collection of Marcel Jeanson (Christie’s, London, 8 November 2000). Thereafter, books and manuscripts were offered in both London and Paris, and the numeration of the sales becomes confusing: Sotheby’s offered in London Jeanson’s illuminated manuscript of Sydrach’s Fontaine de toutes Sciences (12 December 2000), “ninth” and “tenth” sales of books were conducted by Aguttes in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Livres de chasse et d’histoire naturelle: bibliothèque Marcel Jeanson: neuvième vente, et à divers, 10 Octobre 2001; Livres de chasse, d’histoire naturelle et d’équitation: bibliothèque Marcel Jeanson: dixième vente, et à divers, 16 January 2003); and Sotheby’s France SA offered more books in Paris (Livres et manuscrits: incluant des livres provenant du Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte et de la bibliothèque Marcel Jeanson, 16 June 2005, lots 109-152). ¶ Good, unmarked copies.

Bibliothèque Marcel Jeanson : Première partie : Chasse (catalogue for an auction conducted by Sotheby’s Monaco SAM, Sporting d’Hiver, Monte Carlo, 28 February 1987-1 March 1987)

    Monte Carlo, Sotheby’s Monaco, 1987
(27.5 cm), 515 (5) pp., illustrations (some in colour). Lots numbered 1-598. List of prices realised loosely inserted. Publisher’s printed green cloth boards. - A collection amassed in the period 1920-1939, containing no less than six of the forty-six surviving manuscripts of Gaston Phébus “Le livre de chasse”; the first, probably Brittany, 1430-1440, was sold for FF6,200,000 to the Getty Museum (now Ms. 27/87.MR.34; The J. Paul Getty Museum Journal, volume 16, 1988, pp.147-149 no. 14). The Museum also purchased (via Richard Day, for FF2,200,000) Anovelo da Imbonate, “Legenda Venerabilium Vivorum Aymonis et Vermondi” (now Ms. 26/87.MN.33). Prices for the early printed books were strong, however many “might have fared still better if they had been spared some of the extremes of chemical laundering… The total for the sale was the sterling equivalent of almost £4.5 million” (from a saleroom report in The Book Collector, pp.250-253). ¶ Unmarked copy.

(27.5 cm), 205 (13) pp., illustrations (some in colour). Lots numbered 1-392. List of prices realised loosely inserted. Publisher’s printed green cloth boards, dust jacket. - The ornithology books sold well, however they “were as nothing to the Nicolas Robert drawings, two of which made no less than FF 380,000 each. It was a field day at Monaco” (from a saleroom report in The Book Collector, Autumn 1988, p.399). ¶ Unmarked copy.
