Evelyn (1876-1922), which was meant to ensure its preservation in perpetuity. After the death of his son, Cecil John Albin (”Jack”) Evelyn in 1976, the Trustees determined that the sale of the Library was necessary, and their obligation to obtain the maximum price required its sale piecemeal by auction. Nicolas Barker, “The sale of the Evelyn Library, 1977-8” in The Book Collector, Summer 1995, pp.210-217. Not present here is “The last scraping of the Evelyn barrel, including odd volumes and bought-in lots as well as some new material” sold by Christie’s, 8 November 1978 (saleroom report in The Book Collector, Summer 1979, p.267). ¶ Parts I-IV are excellent, unmarked copies, with printed Lists of prices realised and buyers’ names loosely inserted; the catalogue of the “Evelyn Family library” has occasional annotations, and no Price list.
