Irving Davis, proprietor of Davis & Orioli, best-known for having unsuccessfully offered (on behalf of Enzo Ferrajoli) the infamous “Vinland Map” to the British Museum. “Towards the end of his life he withdrew a number of books from his stock and kept them for himself; they were retained by his family until now” (Catalogue preface). A previous sale (305 lots) had been conducted by Sotheby & Co., 2 December 1968. ¶ Unmarked copy. No Price list.
