A Piranesi drawing with twenty-six lines of notes on the back made €380,000. Lot 16, “The sixty coloured drawings attributed to Pierre Gourdelle in proto-fanfare calf made the top price, €1,100,000 [€1,422,244 inclusive]; it has a twin in the Museum de l’Histoire Naturelle, and the catalogue tentatively attributed them to the Guise circle” (from a saleroom report in The Book Collector, Autumn 2006, pp.398-399). The album was offered by Librairie Thomas-Scheler at the 2016 New York Book Fair (“P.O.R”). The clou of the sale, La chartreuse de Parme corrected for a second edition by Balzac, was presented by Pierre Berès to the Bibliothèque Nationale before the sale (now cote NAF 28056 (1-5). ¶ Wrappers soiled.
