Travel, atlases and natural history (catalogue of an auction sale conducted by Sotheby's, London, 23-24 April 1987)
London, Sotheby's, 1987
(26 cm), 232 (8) pp., illustrations (some in colour). 383 lots. Publisher’s printed wrappers. - A complete set of Gould’s bird books, which had belonged to Gould himself, and was sent for sale by his great-grandson, still housed in the original walnut-veneered cabinet, failed to sell as a single lot (lot 20, £300,000). The books were then offered as sixteen separate lots, and realised together £397,495. Top price was £121,000 (estimate £80,000-£100,000) for the eight-volume Birds of Australia (lot 20g). ¶ Annotated copy, partly priced. No price list.
