Publisher’s printed wrappers. - Account of the antiquarian bookseller of New York, William Gowans (1803-1870), whose customers included John Carter Brown and James Lenox, Washington Irving and Longfellow. Concludes with descriptions of Gowans’ various publications, and a list of his unpublished bibliographical productions, together with a location register. ‘The booklet has been published, with the ugliest title-page I have seen for many years…’ (from an otherwise appreciative notice in Quaerendo, volume 22, 1992, pp.61-62).
