Italienreisen im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert (Bibliotheca Hertziana, Römische Forschungen; 15)

Vienna & Munich, Schroll Verlag, 1959
(28.5 cm), 448 pp., 128 black & white illustrations. Publisher’s cloth, pictorial dust jacket. - An analysis of the contents of travel reports and guidebooks to Italy (to about 1750), by the librarian of the Hertziana library in Rome, author of the invaluable annotated bibliography Le Guide di Roma (Vienna 1930). In an early chapter Schudt deals with guides for the traveller in his quest for art, and in the last one (about 100 pages) he considers the travellers’ opinions on specific art works, either quoting directly or summing up briefly whatever the author has to say. A list is provided of old art collections arranged by cities and of authors who mention them. ¶ Tears in dust jacket; otherwise a very good, unmarked copy.
