Williamsburg, College of William and Mary in Virginia, 1988
(30.5 cm), xxxii, 416 pp., 455 black & white illustrations, 32 colour plates. Errata slip. Publisher’s pictorial wrappers. - 215 catalogue entries, including many prints, maps, and books. Contains 46 essays, divided into five sections: politics, religious history and law; cartography, military history, trade and finance; philosophy, science, medicine and education; visual arts; music, literature and publishing. Among the contributors are David Alexander (English Prints and Printmaking), J.A. Downie (Politics and the English Press), Michael Treadwell (The English Book Trade), Carolyn Nelson (English Newspapers and Periodicals); Peter Barber (British Cartography), Dirk de Vries (Dutch Cartography). ‘Each chapter has in its notes useful, if at times very elementary references to literature. Taken altogether, the claim in the subtitle that this is a “reference encyclopedia” has certainly been realised, not least by means of the many and well-chosen illustrations.’ (from a notice in Quaerendo, volume 21, 1991, p.156). ¶ Fine, unmarked copy.
