Uniform publisher’s cloth, dust jackets. - Catalogue raisonné of the single-sheet prints and “minor” book illustrations of Matthaeus Merian the Elder (1593-1650). In the second volume, nos. 1-56 describe the books published by Merian containing illustrations produced by himself, as well as those by other artists; nos. 57a-108 describe books illustrated with etchings by Merian and published by others; nos. 109-37 describe books issued by Merian’s heirs as featuring works by Merian, but which are not now considered to contain any illustrations by him or his followers. The final two chapters are devoted to books listed in Merian’s stock catalogues that Wüthrich was unable to trace, and books containing illustrations with doubtful attributions to Merian. Two further volumes treating “Die großen Buchpublikationen” (biblical, historical, and topographical illustrations) were published in 1993-1996; both volumes are currently available from the publisher, Hoffmann und Campe (ISBN 9783455085235, price €50; 9783455085228, price €89.95).
