Wolfenbüttel, Herzog-August-Bibliothek, 1983
(26 cm), 229 (1) pp., illustrations (some in colour). Folding “Motivströme in der Fabelillustration vom 15. bis 18. Jahrhundert” loosely inserted. Publisher’s pictorial wrappers. - Catalogue (170 entries) and six essays by Peter Hasubek (definitions of the fable), Klaus Grubmüller (the fable in Antiquity and the Middle Ages), and Christian Ludwig Küster (illustrations in fable books of the 15th-16th centuries), Jürgen Grimm (illustrated editions of La Fontaine’s fables), Martin Bircher (Swiss fable books), Helmut Arntzen (German animal fables in the 18th century). “The first serious attempt to present the fable, as a literary and social genre, as transmitted by the press… To all who think of fables as simply an adjunct of ‘children’s books’ (a confused label at best), this exhibition will be a revelation. Vivid, original, scholarly, it deserves wider exposure outside Germany” (The Book Collector, Autumn 1984, pp.340-343). The content is drawn from the HAB’s own collections and the private library of Dr Ulrich von Kritter (1909-1999). ¶ Very good, unmarked copy.
