German Baroque literature : a catalogue of the collection in the Yale University Library § Volume 2

New Haven, Yale University Press, 1958; 1969
Two volumes (26 cm), xlii, 496 pp., 13 illustrations; xvii, 185 pp., 7 plates, illustrations. Publisher’s dark red cloth, printed dust jackets. - First editions. “An extraordinarily interesting catalog of little-known books with a stimulating commentary. I have read many catalogs but do not recall another that I have read from cover to cover” (from a review by Archer Taylor, in The Library Quarterly, volume 29, 1959, pp.57-59). In 1944-1945 the author had negotiated the sale of his outstanding collection (some 7500 items) to Yale University Library, and thereafter served as its curator of German literature. The second volume lists almost 550 books added subsequently. The informative notes on each book raise the work far above the level of a catalogue. “This is a standard work and deserves to remain so for a very long time” (from a review by Leonard Forster, in The Book Collector, Summer 1959, pp.200-204). Donald C. Dickinson, Dictionary of American Book Collectors (New York 1986), p.322. ¶ Dust jacket on volume II worn, with significant losses.
